One of the hardest decisions for a superintendent is whether or not to close a school. It’s disruptive to students, families, and the broader community. I want to explain why and how I made this decision.
On Tuesday evening, one of our teachers tested positive for COVID-19, and another staff member remains out sick. We were unable to secure substitute teachers for Wednesday, September 4. After consulting with Mr. Carver, the County Superintendent, the Happy Camp Union School District Board, and staff, I decided to close the school for that day.
This was not an easy decision, but it was necessary to ensure the safety of our community.
After monitoring staff health and further consultation, I closed school on Thursday, September 5. Unfortunately, due to ongoing illness and a lack of available substitutes, we will remain closed tomorrow, Friday, September 6. This extended closure gives us five days without close contact, which should help prevent further spread.
We have secured one substitute teacher who will start on Monday and stay with us long-term, and we are working to confirm another. Combined with our efforts to bring in exchange teachers, this is a positive step forward.
I know these closures have been difficult for families, and I appreciate your patience. We fully expect to reopen on Monday, September 9.
Sincerely,
Mr. Van Dyke
Superintendent/Principal
